The short version
New pay transparency rules are spreading. Publishing ranges is easy; explaining how pay decisions are made is where trust is won.
Posting salary ranges reveals more than numbers. It reveals whether your pay decisions follow principles people can understand.
Write your pay principles
Before ranges go public, agree on three to five principles: how you benchmark, what moves someone within a range, and how often you review.
Prepare managers for the conversation
Most employees will ask their manager, not HR. Give managers a short script and the authority to say “I don't know, but I'll find out by Friday.”
Fix gaps before you publish
Run an internal audit first. Correcting inequities quietly before transparency arrives is far cheaper—in money and trust—than explaining them afterward.
